Will the Wells Fargo Championship stay in Wilmington?
No. The tournament will return to Quail Hollow Club, in Charlotte, NC in 2018 and 2019.
Why is the Wells Fargo Championship not in Charlotte in 2017?
With the PGA Championship being played at Quail Hollow Club in August, the Wells Fargo Championship will have to be played
elsewhere because preparations for the PGA Championship will be in full-swing.
Isn’t the Wells Fargo Championship a PGA event?
No. The Wells Fargo Championship is a PGA TOUR event. The PGA of America conducts the PGA Championship—one of golf’s four major championships.
Why wouldn’t the Wells Fargo Championship stay in Charlotte that year at another golf course?
The PGA TOUR, Wells Fargo and Champions For Education (the tournament host organization) looked at several areas in Charlotte and other nearby cities. Because of several factors all three parties concluded this region of North Carolina would be a perfect fit for one year. Through the years, several venues on the PGA TOUR have hosted major championships at the site of an annual TOUR event. And, the TOUR event has moved to another venue within the region with great success.
Has there ever been a PGA TOUR event in Wilmington?
Yes. But not at Eagle Point. There was a PGA TOUR event there from 1949 to 1971 and the tournament was called The Azalea Open
during most of that time. Winners included Arnold Palmer, Mike Souchak and Art Wall, Jr.
When will we know what players will be coming to Wilmington in 2017?
Many players will commit to the tournament several weeks ahead of tournament week and we will announce their intentions. The deadline for PGA TOUR players to commit to a TOUR event is Friday at 5:00 p.m. prior to the next week’s tournament. Keep in mind, players can withdraw from a tournament at any time.
